This video is designed to provide parents with a quick tutorial on how to access practice state tests that students can try out at home.

good evening College Hill family is this is Dr McKinney with a friendly message to our third fourth and fifth grade parents about upcoming State assessments called The Cask or California assessment of student performance progress these tests are going across the state of California beginning anytime between March and the end of the school year will be taking them at Collegeville in the first couple of weeks of May or 3rd 4th and 5th grade students will be taking tests an English language arts and math are fifth grade students will also be taking a science test and our third and fourth grade dual language immersion students will be taken to the Gulf of California Spanish assessment so they're quite a few different tests that will be administered ways that parents and Guardians can help at home is by taking a look at the state testing website and maybe trying some practice exams and students now here at the school or 3rd 4th and 5th grade teachers are already in the process showing kids what these tests look like in practicing them with them in the classroom but the more kind of exposure that they get to these tests and practice that they get I think we can all agree that they're likely to do a little bit better on them that added practice just serves to give them to me already with the formatting and the style of questions that are on there I think we might also agreed that if as a parent or Guardian you're sitting next to your child and looking at these test together help to emphasize to our students that we take them seriously and that there are important exams so let me show you how you can access these at home first volunteer to share my screen with you okay and simply by going into Google you can type and see a a spp and that'll take you to the Casp website the area that's the homepage on the cast website their whole bunch of different buttons on there the one that you want to click on is practice and training tests and if you click on that you're going to see some different selections so you can look at you're going to want to go to the green with her that says student interface practice and training test to click on that it'll ask you to sign in don't change anything up here just go ahead and hit sign in and what you're going to see them is your belly disliked grade-level if you're the parent of a 3rd 4th or 5th grader you can go ahead and just go to one of these here now if you want you can certainly for different grade levels but I recommend taking a look at the same guy that your child is in I'm so we'll go to a third grade test here and then you have a selection of different test performance tasks and practiced Ela sense English language arts math is math we'll just for the sake of Simplicity will actually let me let me show you if you scroll down you'll see some of the other tests that are available that you can try out but really I think the ones that we want to focus on are the what are balanced practice tests and for our third and fourth graders be California Spanish assessment I'm going to go back up here and we will take a look at a English language arts assessment there we go okay you're going to have a variety of different settings that you can play around with I would suggest just for the sake of Simplicity not to change any of the settings so you had an opportunity to to just take a look at what the test looks like without changing the settings but you can adjust things in terms of how the test will look for example changing the color contrast or adding the idiot Zoom feature text-to-speech audio transcription there are quite a few different things that you can toggle and change on the settings for the sake of Simplicity will lead these settings alone and I'll simply hit select there we go very first thing you're going to see is an audio video check click on that if you hear the Little tune you know that the audio is working you click on I could play the sound and video it lets you then go back to change settings if you need to but we're not going to do that we're just going to head begin test now okay and then it gives you what the test looks like this is what students something that this is innocence what a student will see when they're taking a language arts exam a 3rd grader this particular sample test gives students a passage to read on one side they read read read read read and then after they read it's a multiple choice selection they pick the answer that they feel best explains in this case does which detail from the passage best explains why the father must stop working in the field so this case the student is expected to read what's on the left hand side read the quest and then select the appropriate answer and move along to the next set of questions and so on and so on and so on as you explore the test I'll see that you have some different options that you can look at like making the text lot bigger or making the text smaller that there are things like a line reader which lets you highlight sentence by sentence which might be handy for some students to help them Focus a notepad to let you write down notes for those students that might need benefit from something like that strike through fun and that lets you strikethrough certainly answers for example if I wanted to strike that answer out to help me Focus as a student and say you know it's not answer a it's going to be B C or D that that might be something that might benefit certain students this gives you a very kind of quick idea of what a state test looks like and again it is my feeling is my belief that the more exposure that our students get to these types of tests that the more likely it is that they'll do better on them because they'll have had some practice and because we have the ability at home for those that have internet and tablets or computers that kids can access these tests on that that might just provide them with just that little bit of extra practice so that we can see our our student performance be as good as it can be possibly be all right I hope that you found that video useful if you have any follow-up questions with regards to the state test by all means ask or students will be taking these tests the first couple of pics of May I believe our fifth graders are scheduled to start with the science test the last week of April and again. The purpose here is that we want to give our students plenty of practice in Opera. what is to explore what those tests look like to decrease and anxiety and fear on their part and again just give them that extra incentive to do their absolute best on there okay thanks for your time and thanks for your support of Collegeville Elementary School take care
